Before 1776, the dominant assumption in Europe and the eastern Mediterranean was simple: great empires do not fall because ‘subjects’ rebel. The American Revolution shattered that belief and inspired the Greeks to fight once more for their freedom as they had so many times before in their long history. The American Revolution influenced the Greek War of Independence by proving that Enlightenment ideals could defeat imperial rule, providing political models and revolutionary language, inspiring Greek intellectuals and constitutional thinking, and creating a moral precedent that helped legitimize the Greek cause internationally. This mug and the images upon it represent the people’s fight for freedom in face of tyranny.
